Blackjack is a game that you play against the dealer and the aim is to try and reach as close to 21 points as possible without exceeding 21 points. If your hand totals more than 21 points then you will simply go “bust” which means that you will lose. The same goes for the dealer. If the dealer’s hand totals more than 21 points, he or she will also lose. You start by placing a bet and the minimum amount that you can bet in Blackjack is usually AU$1.00.

As soon as you have placed a bet you can hit the Draw/Deal button and then as soon as you have done this you and the dealer will both receive two cards. To give you a little bit of a clue as to what the dealer is holding, one of his cards will be dealt face up. The number cards (including 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10) are all worth their face value in points. The Ace can be worth 1 or 11 points and the picture cards (Jack, Queen and King) are all worth 10 points.

In other words, the best possible hand you could be dealt to begin with would be an Ace and a picture card such as a King (11 + 10 = 21 points). This is known as a Natural Blackjack and the only thing that could stop you from winning the hand would be if the dealer also happens to have an identical hand, in which case the game would end in a tie (which is known as a Push). In a push situation you would receive your initial stake back.

Some of the other betting options that will become available for you during a game will include Hit (take another card), Stand (stick with the current hand so that it becomes the dealer’s turn), Double (double your current bet), Split (where you can split to matching cards to create two hands) or Insurance (take insurance if the dealer’s face up card is an Ace). Learning Basic Blackjack Strategy teaches you what to do when you are dealt certain hands and it is designed to give you a little bit of an edge over the house.
